Cratesia is a town situated in Nucilandia, known for its unique architecture and location. Also known as The Crater Town, the town is built on a hill with a large hole in the middle, which serves as the central feature of the town. It was historically the administrative seat of the now-defunct Cratesia County. The most important structures of the town are situated underground, alongside the walls of the hill's pit.
The town is protected by a wall at the top of the hill, offering a commanding view of the surrounding forests. These forests provide natural resources and shelter for the town's inhabitants.
The name Cratesia is derived from its unique location, built within a crater-shaped hole in the middle of a hill. It is a combination of the word "crater" and the termination "ia", and it perfectly captures the town's connection to its geographic features and serves as a reminder of its unique history and culture.
Cratesia was first discovered and settled sometime in 2019 by Hori, who was looking for a new home and solace in the dense forests of the Nucilandian wilderness. A base was officially established in December 2019 when Coninstar joined him and a palisade wall was built for protection.
In early 2023, Cratesia had seen a period of rapid and unprecedented growth. The palisade walls were replaced by fortified stone walls with proper battlements, the keep was completed, and the hillside was completely filled with buildings.
On 27 July 2023, Calistrat Pintilie wrote Guide to Cratesia: The Crater Town, a travel guide presenting the settlement as a resilient and ingenious town whose history, culture, and architecture were shaped by its crater-like geography.
In February 2024, the settlement expanded beyond its earlier small base with the construction of a square, church and cemetery. The Church of Cratesia was consecrated by Mib Boby on 7 February 2024, using sacred water brought from Enada Lake.
Throughout its history, Cratesia has faced numerous challenges, including attacks from Zaganian raiders. However, the town's resilient inhabitants have always managed to overcome these obstacles and maintain their way of life.
Cratesia was sporadically attacked by Zaganian raiders, though this never proved to be anything more than an annoyance, as the town's palisade was enough to stop them most of the time. Ever since proper walls were constructed in February 2023, the raiders were unable to enter the town and could be fought from the safety of the wall's battlements, or simply ignored.
Cratesia is situated on a hill in the wilderness of Nucilandia. The surrounding forests offer plenty of building material and hunting ground, and steep walls of the crater provide natural protection from the elements. The view from the summit gives a broad panorama of the surrounding forest and rest of the locality, while the pit itself functions as the nucleus of the town's architecture.
Cratesia has a rich culture and history, with many traditions and customs passed down through generations. The town's library is a popular destination for scholars from throughout Nucilandia, offering a wide variety of books and tomes. In Guide to Cratesia: The Crater Town, the old library is presented as a place where knowledge and stories intermingled and contributed to the intellectual wealth of the settlement.
The Church of Cratesia is also a local centre of Ciupitist liturgy. Mib Boby consecrated it on 7 February 2024 with sacred water brought from Enada Lake. Every morning, Papa Lama invokes Atacatistul lui Ștefan57 there, a condemnatory text against Ștefan Marius Snagoveanu written at Hori's request following the aggressions of the Snagovian People's Republic against Nucilandia and the Brotherhood of the United Blocks.
The town's residents have adapted to this unique environment by building their homes and businesses into the hillsides, creating a distinctive architectural style that is still evident in the town today.
Cratesia's economy is primarily based on livestock farming and trade, with many farmers and merchants calling the town home. The underground vault is a large secured warehouse, located in the middle of the town, under Serene Park, and serves as testament to the town's wealth. It shelters valuable goods and resources, supporting both the town's prosperity and the security of its inhabitants.
The Cratesian Chicken, a domesticated avian breed first bred by Coninstar in late 2019, is endemic to the region. It is a staple of local cuisine and a symbol of the Crater Spirit, though genuine pure-crater bloodlines remain difficult to maintain outside the local environment.
The town's unique architecture and location also make it a popular destination for tourists, further bolstering its economy.
Cratesia is most readily accessible by train, having direct connections with Solara and Enada.
It is also well-connected by road, being connected to Solara, Veneței, and other villages.
