Cratesian Chicken is a domesticated avian breed endemic to Cratesia, Nucilandia. First bred by Coninstar in late 2019, it descends from the wild chickens found inside Cratesia's crater during the settlement's earliest phase.
The Cratesian Chicken descends from local wild chickens found within the rim of the crater during the initial settlement phase of Cratesia. According to oral history, the founding settlers began breeding these birds as a source of food at Coninstar's initiative after he established his residence in the area.
Cratesian Chickens are a dietary staple of Cratesian cuisine and are also considered a symbol of resilience and adaptation. The breed has become emblematic of the "Crater Spirit", the capacity to persist amid adversity that appears frequently in Cratesian folklore.
Attempts to export the breed have produced mixed results, as the birds tend to become lethargic or develop health issues outside their local environment. As a result, genuine Cratesian Chickens remain a prized delicacy and cultural artefact of the region.
Cratesian Chicken breeding is overseen by the Cratesian Agricultural Guild, with heritage bloodlines carefully maintained. Hybrid strains exist, but pure-craters, as they are colloquially known, remain restricted to birds with access to soil from within and around the crater.
The breed was officially recognised by the Nucilandian Bureau of Agricultural Genetics in March 2025, solidifying its status as a distinct regional breed.
